Villa Marchi – Private Residence

Padova

Part of a major architectural renovation project involving a detached house built in the early sixties.

The series of custom pieces we were commissioned to make for the house — seen as a prime example of Padua’s mid-century modern style — has become an integral part of the design.

In a setting of this style and scale, furniture serves more than just a functional or storage purpose, instead becoming an essential tool for organizing the spaces: wardrobes, for example, have been designed to double as partition walls, punctuating the interiors and dividing up the rooms.

Working closely with the architects overseeing the work, we homed in on premium natural materials like smoked eucalyptus wood, leather and textiles, used for four walk-in wardrobes connecting with three bathrooms, complete with custom mirrors and shower enclosures.

The whole project revolves around the staircase, a showstopping functional centrepiece that links the ground and first floors, acting as an articulated connection between the living area and bedroom level.

The cantilevered metal steps have been clad in leather and are stabilized by belts anchored to the ceiling; hand sewn on site one by one, they look like they “stitch” the steps together, turning the whole structure into a powerfully expressive architectural feature.
